The future of hospitality is that of mobility, reputation management and engagement

Singapore – The Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association
International (HSMAI) Asia Pacific’s 10th Annual AsiaConnect
Conference was held in Singapore on September 3, 2014 at the Marina Bay Sands
Expo & Conference Center. The conference brought to bear insights about the
market and hospitality industry that benefited all participants.

Pin
Tsin Go, Territory Manager – Southeast Asia at TripAdvisor for Business
informed delegates that people are still making travel plans and that their
budget for travel is increasing globally by 9%. What’s important to travelers
is connectivity and along with affordability so that they can stay and spend
more during their travels. Therefore, price is key, but only when coupled with
a positive experience, which builds the online reputation of a property.
Moreover, pictures are essential – 73% of TripAdvisor users used photos from
other travellers to make a decision to book, and 75% of members were more
likely to use a business with a TripAdvisor endorsement

Go
said that only 1 in 4 hotels is taking advantage of TripAdvisor’s management
centre to help manage their property’s reputation online. Typically, the more
mature the property is, the better the reviews they receive. She also said that
reviews are typically positive. “48% of reviews receive a 5 bubbles rating and
30% a 4 star rating. The average review scorer is 4.12.”

Conference
delegates also learned the secret to the factors that influence a property’s popularity
ranking. The factors include the quality of reviews received (that is, how well
the property is rated), how fresh the content is and the quantity of reviews.

Peter
Ollerton, Director of Business Development – South Pacific and North Asia for
Nor1 shared his belief that hoteliers should develop mobile as an ancillary sales
tool to reach guests throughout the entire travel lifecycle.

“Mobile
represents ancillary revenue opportunities as it promotes last minute in-house
sales for F&B, spa or golf packages, for example”, observed Ollerton. “Travellers
spend 42% of their money before the trip and 58% during the trip.”

John
Mims, Chief Connector & Managing Partner of The Hunting Ridge Group, led a panel
to discuss “The voice of the customer”. Farin Salleh, GM of amcasia, Janet
Tan-Collis, CEO of East West Planners, John Bowen, CEO of MediaConcepts,
Laurens van den Oever, Global Director Travel & Tourism for GfK and Mike
Lee, VP of Sales for Marina Bay Sands participated in the discussion.

What
came out of the discussion was a clear need for technology to help minimize the
lead time and decision making that it takes to plan an event.

Janet
Tan-Collis said “Even a simple program for 10 people can take up to 50 emails
organize”.

The
panel discussed the need for transparency with venue bookings. For example, a
customer may book a venue or seek quotations from event organizers for the same
venue to compare prices.

John
Mims and Mike Lee said that as a venue sales manager, “You have to be careful
how you prepare the initial discussion. You might get the same query from a
variety of sources.”

“You
have to be transparent with the deal to win over both candidates and the end
user. Sometimes it is best to wait to quote until you really know who you are
dealing with.”

PNG LNG Project awarded the 2014 CWC LNG Innovation Asia Pacific Award

SINGAPORE – The PNG LNG Project, operated by ExxonMobil PNG Limited, received
the esteemed CWC
LNG Innovation Asia Pacific Award
last week on Wednesday
24 September 2014, at a glamorous dinner event, hosted by Trafigura, at the SEA
Aquarium on Sentosa Island, Singapore. The award recognizes a company operating
in the Asia Pacific LNG industry that has excelled themselves in the previous
12 months in terms of commercial or technical innovation.

The PNG LNG Project is a
joint venture between ExxonMobil, Oil Search, National Petroleum Company of
PNG, Santos, JX Nippon Oil and Gas Exploration, Mineral Resources Development
Company and Petromin PNG Holdings. The PNG Government holds a 19.6 percent
stake in the Project.

Mr Yow-Yeen Lee, PNG LNG Senior
Project Manager, accepted the award and said, “I would like to acknowledge and
thank all the people who made this Project a reality—the 55,000 project team
members who collectively worked over 200 million hours; our Project co-venturers;
as well as the many financing entities of commercial banks and export credit
agencies.”

The PNG Project delivered its first LNG cargo on
25 May this year to the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) in Japan. It has
since shipped more than 25 cargoes to customers in Asia. It is estimated that
the PNG LNG project will produce more than 9 trillion cubic feet of gas over the
next 30 years.

Delegates
who participated in the 6th
World LNG Series Asia Pacific Summit
(LNG Asia) voted for the
award winner. Participants included
global leaders of the LNG industry and government representatives.

The 2014 finalists for the awards were:

  1. Singapore LNG Corporation
Security of gas supply for the Singapore market remains SLNG’s top priority. In
the past one year, SLNG stabilized commercial operations at the LNG terminal,
ramping up Throughput Services to cater to about 20% of
the Singapore gas market. In September 2013, SLNG performed its first LNG ship
    cool-down operation.
  2. Mozambique LNG – Anadarko Petroleum
Corp. (APC) has inked deals to sell gas from Mozambique at a hybrid price that
combines Henry Hub and world oil prices and factors in costs for shipping and
    treatment.
  3. Yamal LNG – Owners have taken a
final investment decision for Yamal LNG. The 16.5-million tonne/year
liquefaction plant will be built on the Yamal Peninsula on the Kara Sea with
first-train start-up set for around 2017 and the recent (world first)
commissioning of 16 icebreaker tankers, each able to transport 170, 000 m³.
  4. Petronas – Reached final
investment decision for its second floating LNG (FLNG) project. Meanwhile PFLNG
1 is to be ready for start-up ready around end of 2015
  5. PNG LNG – Successful
startup  of both trains – with a faster
ramp up than expected and a move to full contract volumes before the end of the
year and its maiden shipment to Japan’s Tokyo Electric Power Co.
  6. SEMPRA LNG – FID on 3 trains at
Cameron using a successful project structure that led to 100% of the output
sold and the single largest project finance deal in the United States history

Selection of the award candidates was based
upon the company that has made a positive commercial or technical contribution
to the LNG business over the last year in one or more of the following areas:

  • Innovation –
through technical or commercial innovation, the organisation which has made a
positive change to the industry in the Asia Pacific region
  • Activities –
through activities, the organisation which has made an outstanding contribution
to the industry and shown itself to be an industry leader in any specific part
of the LNG chain in the Asia Pacific region

Vida Vino brings the essence of the Mediterranean to Keong Saik Road

About Vida Vino

Vida Vino, a chic space that echoes the 50’s in a vibrant way, reflects what Vida Vino stands for – meaning ‘Wine Life’ in Spanish. It is a place where the beauty and the vibrancy of Spain meets the classic elegance of the Mediterranean – an honest space that pays homage to bygone days.

Vida Vino offers a casual dining experience, yet has fine attention to detail. The tapas are served in a fun-to-share manner. It is situated right in the heart of Singapore’s vibrant food scene at 29 Keong Saik Road in Singapore.

Food

The restaurant sources the highest quality, most fresh ingredients to produce its dishes. For example, the 5 Jotas Pure Iberico Jamon de Bellota, which is air flown weekly to Singapore from Jabugo in Spain; or clams that are flown in from France twice a week. These ingredients, prepared in a time-honoured tradition, give the savoury morsels produced in the Vida Vino kitchen their bona fide Mediterranean flavour. The dishes are creatively presented and the menu has a few modern twists, such as the Crispy Beer Tempura Courgette Flower, filled with Ricotta Cheese and Mint. On special occasions, you’ll be rewarded with something typical from the region – like Turron at Christmas time.

Our Executive Chef

The kitchen is helmed by Executive Chef Victor Caballé Molina.

Victor grew up in Spain and comes from a family of restaurateurs, sommeliers, pâtissiers and chefs. His grandfather, a great chef who cooked dishes from recipes handed down through generations, taught him to cook and pick fresh ingredients from his own garden. At 14, he learned to bake many variations of bread at a bakery owned by family friends.

Victor honed his skills at some of the world’s finest restaurants. His professional development began under the tutelage of Chef John-Philippe Patruno from the three Michelin star restaurant Chez Nico on London’s Park Lane and the critically acclaimed Fino and Barrafina. He later worked at the 88-year old world renowned Quo Vadis on London’s Dean Street, as well as at the well known Jose Pizarro restaurant on Bermondsy Street and at the W Hotel’s Spice Market, before moving to Singapore. In Singapore, Victor reunited with Chef Jean-Philippe Patruno at Bomba. Most recently, he was the Head Chef of The Study restaurant (Keong Saik Snacks) – one of Jason Atherton’s famed eateries.

The Wine Life

With wine in its name, the collection at Vida Vino spans from across the globe. Wines from Spain, Italy and France to New Zealand, Austria and California can be found here. The collection has been carefully selected with taste and quality in mind, featuring labels that may be off the beaten track yet are their wines are excellent, priced at great value.

The heavier reds pair fantastically with the Iberian ham platters and of course with the Iberico Pork Secreto. The light and crisp whites pair magically with the seafood dishes.

Even the drinks are special. The Vida Vino Sangria has proved very popular as it is loaded with liquor – Jack Daniels, Cointreau, Creme de Cassis, Cava – and fruits, including some coconut, which are blended together to make a ‘crystal clear’ Sangria. A Gin & Tonic is prepared using chardonnay to give it a crisp, refreshing taste.

Our Sommelier

Cruise Yang is a wine enthusiast turned sommelier. He is a somewhat unorthodox in the discipline, as he believes that wine is much more than simply a drink – it is a lifestyle choice, a mood or it represents an idea. He breathes life into a wine menu with his romantic descriptions because his philosophy is that the mental impression of the wine is as important as the taste of the wines themselves.

In 2009 Cruise opened a wine retail shop called “World of Wines”. In 2012 he partnered with Iconic Wines, Singapore’s largest Spanish wines distributor, to open ” E Plus Wine” at Dempsey Hill.Cruise is also the founder of “Man of wine”, a wine lover’s community where people are brought together, beyond our urban walls, one glass at a time.

Management

Aaron Olivera, El Presidente Vida Vino was conceived by Aaron Olivera, the Founder and President of the Vida Vino Group. Aaron is from Gibraltar, a UK colony on Spain’s southernmost tip. He has been travelling to Singapore for the past 15 years, working in different industries, from Training and Development, to Oil and Gas and Publishing. In 2010 Aaron decided to pursue his passion to create spaces that afford people with ultimate enjoyment. Aaron believes that life is too short to allow ourselves the luxury of living it badly, that life should be a party, a grand festival. At Vida Vino he ensures that the overall direction and ethos stays true to the core of helping to deliver happiness.

SoSoH Group – Investor & Operator

The principal investor and operator of Vida Vino is the SoSoH Group, a Singapore headquartered company, which is fast growing its lifestyle business group.  The SoSoH Group manages Vino Vido’s operations, finance and compliance. The intention is to develop and expand the brand across Asia while retaining an authentic Spanish experience for its patrons.  The SoSoH Group has interests in hotels, villas and restaurants in Bali and has plans to extend its lifestyle brand into Hong Kong, China & Taiwan over the next 2 years.
