Conference was held in Singapore on September 3, 2014 at the Marina Bay Sands
Expo & Conference Center. The conference brought to bear insights about the

ACI releases 2014 Asia Pacific Travel/Hospitality Industry Salary Report

In summary:

  • 68 per cent of respondents received a pay increase in the past 12 months
  • 22 per cent of respondents felt career opportunities with their present company were poor
  • 71 per cent of respondents rate career progression as important or very important
  • 12 per cent higher salary for male respondents than female respondents  

SINGAPORE – Speaking at the official launch event held at the Singapore Tourism Board and attended by HR and Travel & Hospitality professionals, ACI’s Founder & CEO, Andrew Chan said this year’s results showed positive signs for staff working in the Asia Pacific travel and hospitality sector, with 68 per cent of all respondents who participated in the survey indicating they had received a pay increase in the last 12 months.

“2013 proved to be an excellent year for international tourism which showed a remarkable capacity to adjust to changing market conditions, fuelling growth and job creation across the region, despite the lingering economic and geopolitical challenges.” Mr Chan said.

While salary continues to be an important factor for candidates, Mr Chan pointed to the increasing trend in the importance of career development on employee satisfaction. A total of 71 per cent of all respondents stated that career progression was either ‘extremely important’ or ‘very important’, with just 3 per cent saying career progression was unimportant.

Interestingly, employees appear more satisfied with their current prospects than they did in previous years, with just 34 per cent of those surveyed said they believed that their current employer offered ‘excellent’ or ‘good’ opportunities for career progression, compared with the 28 per cent seen in 2013, and only 22 per cent felt career prospects with their present employer were ‘poor’ or ‘zero’ compared to the alarming 35 per cent from the previous survey.

Mr Chan said one of the possible reasons was that the improved economic outlook has allowed companies to expand, creating new opportunities for existing staff in new areas of their business or sub-regions.

Launched in late January, the survey this year attracted over 800 respondents from 9 countries across the Asia Pacific region.

These range from company CEOs, managing directors and general managers through to middle management and front line staff.

The largest proportion of respondents (37 per cent) was based in Singapore with China (31 per cent), Hong Kong (17 per cent) and Thailand (4 per cent) also providing strong samples. 
Underlining Singapore’s reputation as one of the most expensive cities globally, average salaries from respondents grew by 16.1% according to the 2014 survey. This was followed closely by Thailand (11.5%) and China (9.8%). On actual highest average salaries from the survey, that once again belonged to Macau with (U$106,800), followed by Hong Kong (U$84,936) and Australia (U$81,939). Malaysia once again posted the survey’s lowest average salary (U$37,418).

Skyscanner takes off across Asia-Pacific

eat2eat launches free app for Android users

Singapore – 19 December 2011 – eat2eat, the leading web-based reservation platform for restaurants, is now available on Android devices for customers’ ultimate convenience. Android users can now download the eat2eat app for free from Android Market, onto their Android phone or tablet device.

Despite only being launched in 2008, the Android mobile platform sees roughly 500,000 Android devices being activated per day globally, adding up to a user base which already exceeds that of Apple’s iOS. As one of the leading technology providers to Asia Pacific’s F&B technology sector, eat2eat chose to introduce their first App on the Android platform to advantage their customers. The App enables free restaurant table reservations, and has clear and easy to use instructions for diners who wish to make hassle-free reservations at any time of the day.

eat2eat’s application allows diners to log-in to a network full of restaurant listings, choose the preferred dining venue, and make a simple “one touch” reservation that is instantly confirmed. The android app permits users to make a booking at the restaurant of their choice at any time, day or night, and provides a straightforward confirmation number.

Amongst restaurateurs who have swapped the old black book for real-time online bookings, there has been marked increases in customer retention and front of house operations flow, leading to a rise in restaurant profitability.

Masami is supported by Kenchiro Kusuyama, who is a prominent figure in the online media industry in Japan, is a frequent speaker at seminars and is a successful start up entrepreneur. Prior to eat2eat, Ken was the General Manager of the Media Division at Thomson Reuters Japan. He grew the website into the third largest financial site in Japan, and hired a team of 20, and over 9 years, increased revenues by 25 times from that in 2001. Ken’s career has encompassed sales and marketing roles mainly at Thomson Reuters, as well as at Cyber Agent, the foremost interactive advertising agency in Japan. He cut his teeth in the industry with a role as a sales representative at Sharp Electronics.

Biswo Khadka has recently joined the eat2eat team as President, China to manage all aspects of eat2eat’s business in China. A career hotelier, Biswo was most recently the General Manager of the immensely popular URBN Hotels Shanghai, where he managed to move the ranking of the hotel from 47th to 5th on Prior to that role, Biswo was the Director of Marketing and Revenue Management for the Swissotel Beijing. Before joining the Swissotel, Biswo held several roles with the InterContinental Hotel Group in China, Cambodia and Nepal. SINGAPORE – eat2eat Pte Ltd, a Singaporean company that empowers restaurants and hotels to enable online bookings for table and other reservations seeks to re-image the local market to focus its attention on local restaurants and to change prevailing norms for taking table reservations by telephone.

“It is limiting to take reservations just by phone”, says Vikram Aggarwal, CEO of eat2eat. “Simply enabling diners to access the restaurant online, a restaurateur can enhance service standards, boost revenue and productivity, plus significantly improve customer loyalty and retention. All of which impact their bottom line.”

The company, which was established in 2000, is the most reputable and longest serving online table reservations platform in Asia Pacific. Its software is extremely robust having been tried and tested in a wide variety of environments by the region’s largest and most well known hospitality brands over the past decade. Something else that excites Aggarwal about the Singapore market is that the Info-communications Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) has turned its attention to enhancing the acceptance of technology in the sector. The IDA has issued a “Call-for-Collaboration” along with SPRING Singapore, the Singapore Tourism Board and Employment and Employability Institute (e2i) for interested parties to submit proposals on the development and adoption of mobility solutions. eat2eat has submitted a proposal as Aggarwal believes the market is now more mature with tools in place to achieve a sea-change in reservation and CRM dynamics.

“Consider the efforts that SPRING and the Singapore Tourism Board are making with the GEMS Up campaign. eat2eat’s software can, for example, impact service standards with a simple tool that enables online reservations,” said Aggarwal. “Primarily because immediate information on the diner is available to the restaurant, and it happens in real time, which enables the restaurateur to instantly enhance their service offering.”

“Although we are a Singaporean company, our focus has always been to offer regional coverage to our diners and to this end, we’ve spent the past few years signing up multiple regional deals, such as our initiative with Starwood Hotels and Resorts – We have been privileged to be the developers of this space in Asia Pacific, as we work with the industry to change reservation habits of a lifetime. Interestingly, over the past decade, it was initially restaurants who wanted to be able to offer online reservations but consumers weren’t yet accustomed to reserving tables that way but now, consumers are demanding the flexibility to book on line.
