The future of hospitality is that of mobility, reputation management and engagement

Singapore – The Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association
International (HSMAI) Asia Pacific’s 10th Annual AsiaConnect
Conference was held in Singapore on September 3, 2014 at the Marina Bay Sands
Expo & Conference Center. The conference brought to bear insights about the
market and hospitality industry that benefited all participants.

Tsin Go, Territory Manager – Southeast Asia at TripAdvisor for Business
informed delegates that people are still making travel plans and that their
budget for travel is increasing globally by 9%. What’s important to travelers
is connectivity and along with affordability so that they can stay and spend
more during their travels. Therefore, price is key, but only when coupled with
a positive experience, which builds the online reputation of a property.
Moreover, pictures are essential – 73% of TripAdvisor users used photos from
other travellers to make a decision to book, and 75% of members were more
likely to use a business with a TripAdvisor endorsement

said that only 1 in 4 hotels is taking advantage of TripAdvisor’s management
centre to help manage their property’s reputation online. Typically, the more
mature the property is, the better the reviews they receive. She also said that
reviews are typically positive. “48% of reviews receive a 5 bubbles rating and
30% a 4 star rating. The average review scorer is 4.12.”

delegates also learned the secret to the factors that influence a property’s popularity
ranking. The factors include the quality of reviews received (that is, how well
the property is rated), how fresh the content is and the quantity of reviews.

Ollerton, Director of Business Development – South Pacific and North Asia for
Nor1 shared his belief that hoteliers should develop mobile as an ancillary sales
tool to reach guests throughout the entire travel lifecycle.

represents ancillary revenue opportunities as it promotes last minute in-house
sales for F&B, spa or golf packages, for example”, observed Ollerton. “Travellers
spend 42% of their money before the trip and 58% during the trip.”

Mims, Chief Connector & Managing Partner of The Hunting Ridge Group, led a panel
to discuss “The voice of the customer”. Farin Salleh, GM of amcasia, Janet
Tan-Collis, CEO of East West Planners, John Bowen, CEO of MediaConcepts,
Laurens van den Oever, Global Director Travel & Tourism for GfK and Mike
Lee, VP of Sales for Marina Bay Sands participated in the discussion.

came out of the discussion was a clear need for technology to help minimize the
lead time and decision making that it takes to plan an event.

Tan-Collis said “Even a simple program for 10 people can take up to 50 emails

panel discussed the need for transparency with venue bookings. For example, a
customer may book a venue or seek quotations from event organizers for the same
venue to compare prices.

Mims and Mike Lee said that as a venue sales manager, “You have to be careful
how you prepare the initial discussion. You might get the same query from a
variety of sources.”

have to be transparent with the deal to win over both candidates and the end
user. Sometimes it is best to wait to quote until you really know who you are
dealing with.”

ACI releases 2014 Asia Pacific Travel/Hospitality Industry Salary Report

In summary:

  • 68 per cent of respondents received a pay increase in the past 12 months
  • 22 per cent of respondents felt career opportunities with their present company were poor
  • 71 per cent of respondents rate career progression as important or very important
  • 12 per cent higher salary for male respondents than female respondents

SINGAPORE – Speaking at the official launch event held at the Singapore Tourism Board and attended by HR and Travel & Hospitality professionals, ACI’s Founder & CEO, Andrew Chan said this year’s results showed positive signs for staff working in the Asia Pacific travel and hospitality sector, with 68 per cent of all respondents who participated in the survey indicating they had received a pay increase in the last 12 months.

“2013 proved to be an excellent year for international tourism which showed a remarkable capacity to adjust to changing market conditions, fuelling growth and job creation across the region, despite the lingering economic and geopolitical challenges.” Mr Chan said.

While salary continues to be an important factor for candidates, Mr Chan pointed to the increasing trend in the importance of career development on employee satisfaction. A total of 71 per cent of all respondents stated that career progression was either ‘extremely important’ or ‘very important’, with just 3 per cent saying career progression was unimportant.

Interestingly, employees appear more satisfied with their current prospects than they did in previous years, with just 34 per cent of those surveyed said they believed that their current employer offered ‘excellent’ or ‘good’ opportunities for career progression, compared with the 28 per cent seen in 2013, and only 22 per cent felt career prospects with their present employer were ‘poor’ or ‘zero’ compared to the alarming 35 per cent from the previous survey.

Mr Chan said one of the possible reasons was that the improved economic outlook has allowed companies to expand, creating new opportunities for existing staff in new areas of their business or sub-regions.

Launched in late January, the survey this year attracted over 800 respondents from 9 countries across the Asia Pacific region.

These range from company CEOs, managing directors and general managers through to middle management and front line staff.

The largest proportion of respondents (37 per cent) was based in Singapore with China (31 per cent), Hong Kong (17 per cent) and Thailand (4 per cent) also providing strong samples.
Underlining Singapore’s reputation as one of the most expensive cities globally, average salaries from respondents grew by 16.1% according to the 2014 survey. This was followed closely by Thailand (11.5%) and China (9.8%). On actual highest average salaries from the survey, that once again belonged to Macau with (U$106,800), followed by Hong Kong (U$84,936) and Australia (U$81,939). Malaysia once again posted the survey’s lowest average salary (U$37,418).

Country Comfort® Reinvents Hotel Franchising with New Model

Fair and Transparent Model Offering Attractive Yields

20 March, 2014 – SINGAPORE – Country Comfort®, an upper midscale hotel brand of SilverNeedle® Hospitality,
is set to reinvent the hotel franchising business with a modern model
that is fair and transparent providing a compelling investment proposition. Based
on the simple principle of aligning its economic interests with those of its
franchisees, SilverNeedle® Hospitality as a franchisor will strive for an ideal partnership
with franchisees by being one of the few hotel franchisors to pass on
all savings from negotiating the lowest possible costs for all furniture, fittings
and equipment (FF&E) with its suppliers, directly to the franchisees.

“As franchising is one of the best ways for hotel owners and
investors to grow a hotel chain, we want to offer an attractive and cost-effective
model that stretches yields,” said Sean Flynn, Executive Vice President, Brands at
Singapore-based SilverNeedle® Hospitality. “As a franchisor, we take a long-term view of
aligning our economic interests with the franchisees’ so we will be one of
the few hotel franchisors that will not make any money off the franchisee’s capital

SilverNeedle® Hospitality aims to take the Country Comfort® brand,
already familiar in Australia and New Zealand, to other parts of Asia Pacific,
specifically Southeast Asia, North and South Asia. The group is in discussions with
interested franchisees in Japan, Malaysia, Macau, Vietnam and Australia.

SilverNeedle® Hospitality’s team of franchising experts has also scoured the
globe for the best-quality FF&E at the lowest costs for franchisees,
thereby maximising their yields. The FF&E cost of a Country Comfort room will be
25% lower than the average FF&E cost of a midscale hotel room according to the
2013/2014 HVS Hotel Development Cost Survey.

“With a combined experience of 48 years in hotel franchising, our
team has learnt the best way to ensure a fruitful franchisor-franchisee
relationship is to help the latter enjoy the highest yield possible,” said Flynn. “With
quality fittings at a reasonable cost, franchisees stand to enjoy higher occupancy as
our offerings gain traction with the busy and budget-conscious business traveller.”

Quality fittings in the Country Comfort® franchise
include the SilverNeedle® DreamWeave Sleep System™ comprising the highest quality pillow-top
mattress with gel-infused memory foam, Egyptian Cotton 300 thread count per
inch linens and a selection of premium pillows.

Guests will also enjoy an energising high pressure shower
experience, with limitless hot water and quality bathware from the high-end German
brand, Bravat. To top it off, a complimentary healthy continental breakfast will
leave guests refreshed to face the next day’s challenges in line with Country
Comfort®’s new brand promise: Rest Today for a More Productive Tomorrow.

By providing only what the guests need – the best in category
sleep experience, an excellent shower experience and nutritious breakfast at a
reasonable rate – and removing what they do not need and do not wish to pay for,
SilverNeedle® Hospitality is confident that occupancy will be greater than its
competitors because of the premium experience in a midscale segment. This, coupled
with the low FF&E cost, will make Country Comfort® a franchise that provides one of
the best yields. To view the Country Comfort® prototype, please go to:

SilverNeedle® Hospitality rebranded the 28-year old Country Comfort® in
October 2013 with a new brand promise and a refreshed brand identity and
introduced the Fair Value Promise™ that includes free Wi-Fi, free local calls and
great value on IDD calls, lobby retail products priced just 30% above local
convenience stores and laundry and dry cleaning at 20% above street pricing.

To further enhance the brand experience, Country Comfort® has
created signature auditory and olfactory experiences with a standardised Country
Comfort® collection of playlists designed to suit the different moods of the day
together with an exclusive signature scent that will be diffused to the hotels’ key

Skyscanner takes off across Asia-Pacific

Monday 19 March 2012 – Six months on from opening its regional headquarters in Singapore, world leading travel search company Skyscanner is seeing strong growth across Asia-Pacific with traffic increases of up to 400 per cent in key markets.

Ewan Gray, Director for Asia Pacific, says: “Growth in our primary target markets has really taken off since we opened our Asia-Pacific headquarters. This speed of growth is something we’ve only seen before in Russia, where we went from a standing start to our second biggest market with over 2 million visits per month in only a couple of years.”

“We expect to see this pace continue with the launch of low cost airlines in Asia. When you add that to the rapid growth of new channels in Asia-Pacific, where people are the most enthusiastic adopters of social media, it’s a really exciting mix. And with more people visiting us from phones, tablets and our mobile apps, mobile internet sessions are outstripping main site sessions for the very first time. That’s quite different from Europe, where roughly one in three users accesses our site through mobile.”

Skyscanner is one of only a few truly one-stop travel search sites available globally that has, unlike most other industry players, independent relations with airline operators and online travel agents rather than relying on centralised data. Comparing prices direct from the airlines with online travel agents, Skyscanner shows results for over 1000 airlines, including low cost airlines and flagship carriers. Skyscanner’s revolutionary search technology and flexible interface – sites are available in many different languages and currencies – allow every user to search for flights in precisely the way they want.

Gareth Williams, CEO and Co-founder of Skyscanner, says: “We are all about saving millions of people time and money with a comprehensive, intelligent and simple travel search experience. When it comes to Asia-Pacific, it is remarkable that nine out of ten of the most highly travelled air routes are in the region. And, it is striking that the diversity of the marketplace works to our strengths in a very similar way to Europe.”

Notes to editors

1. Skyscanner flight comparison app downloads are currently at over 6 million.
2. Skyscanner is available in 29 languages and over 70 currencies.
3. The 75 million searches per month on Skyscanner have generated downstream revenues of approximately US$2 billion for airline partners in the last 12 months.
4. In revenue terms, the group expects to top the £30 million (US$47 million) mark for 2012, representing over 50 per cent year-on-year growth against 2011.
5. Skyscanner employs 130 staff at its European (Edinburgh, Scotland) and Asia-Pacific (Singapore) offices.
6. Skyscanner CEO and Co-founder Gareth Williams is one of the speakers at the London Web Summit on 19 March 2012, joining other industry senior executives and commentators to discuss trends, opportunities and developments in digital media.

eat2eat launches free app for Android users

Singapore – 19 December 2011 – eat2eat, the leading web-based reservation platform for restaurants, is now available on Android devices for customers’ ultimate convenience. Android users can now download the eat2eat app for free from Android Market, onto their Android phone or tablet device.

Despite only being launched in 2008, the Android mobile platform sees roughly 500,000 Android devices being activated per day globally, adding up to a user base which already exceeds that of Apple’s iOS. As one of the leading technology providers to Asia Pacific’s F&B technology sector, eat2eat chose to introduce their first App on the Android platform to advantage their customers. The App enables free restaurant table reservations, and has clear and easy to use instructions for diners who wish to make hassle-free reservations at any time of the day.

eat2eat’s application allows diners to log-in to a network full of restaurant listings, choose the preferred dining venue, and make a simple “one touch” reservation that is instantly confirmed. The android app permits users to make a booking at the restaurant of their choice at any time, day or night, and provides a straightforward confirmation number.

Amongst restaurateurs who have swapped the old black book for real-time online bookings, there has been marked increases in customer retention and front of house operations flow, leading to a rise in restaurant profitability.

“eat2eat’s goal is to increase convenience for both restaurants and diners,” says eat2eat’s CEO Vikram Aggarval. “With most people in Asian cities using smart phones, apps are the best way to connect the two and we will continue to develop new tools to enhance the dining experience.”

eat2eat’s system has become rapidly popular across Asia-Pacific, and is now used by many hotels, restaurants and restaurant groups, including Starwood Hotels, Michaelangelo’s Group and Brewerkz. eat2eat will be releasing an iPhone app early 2012.

eat2eat Challenges Norms in Singapore for Restaurant Table Reservations

10 NOVEMBER 2011

• eat2eat, the number one restaurant reservation software provider in Asia Pacific seeks to change perceptions for online restaurant bookings in Singapore
• CEO Vikram Aggarwal excited by user acceptance for restaurant bookings in their home market and applauds initiatives by IDA in this space

SINGAPORE – eat2eat Pte Ltd, a Singaporean company that empowers restaurants and hotels to enable online bookings for table and other reservations seeks to re-image the local market to focus its attention on local restaurants and to change prevailing norms for taking table reservations by telephone.

“It is limiting to take reservations just by phone”, says Vikram Aggarwal, CEO of eat2eat. “Simply enabling diners to access the restaurant online, a restaurateur can enhance service standards, boost revenue and productivity, plus significantly improve customer loyalty and retention. All of which impact their bottom line.”

The company, which was established in 2000, is the most reputable and longest serving online table reservations platform in Asia Pacific. Its software is extremely robust having been tried and tested in a wide variety of environments by the region’s largest and most well known hospitality brands over the past decade. Eat2eat’s software takes full advantage of the latest cloud technology, and offers a range of solutions to the restaurateur to manage reservations – from the enterprise software MaRc© (Multiple Access Reservation Centre) that runs Hotel Groups like Starwood Hotels and Resorts Asia Pacific to the ability to accept reservations on an iPad or a mobile. It saves the restaurant valuable space as a computer terminal is not required.

“The unique attribute of eat2eat is that we power large hospitality companies by enabling online reservations, without diverting focus from their brand”, says Aggarwal. “For instance, a user is not required to visit the website to make the reservation; we offer a seamless solution so that the transaction happens in its entirety on the restaurants website. We firmly believe that is what both restaurateurs and consumers want – flexibility in operations and control over the channel and database, the focus is our core client – the restaurant.”

Devin Otto Kimble, Managing Director of MENU Pte Ltd, the owner and operator of Brewerkz Restaurants & Microbreweries, illustrates how online reservations have had a significant impact on their operations. “Brewerkz serves nearly 40,000 guests a month and eat2eat has become a significant source of reservations for us. The system is easy to use for both customers and our staff, who find it much more convenient than answering a high volume of phone calls, particularly during busy weekend periods. In addition, it gives our guests the benefit of allowing them to make reservations at any time, rather than waiting to reach us during operating hours. And it has been incredibly simply to implement.”

Michael Hadley, Founder and Proprietor of the Michelaneglo’s Group, has also noticed eat2eat’s impact on productivity and profitability. “Since we launched online reservations for our group using the eat2eat software, we have been receiving a significant proportion of reservations a month online”, said. “It has improved our productivity because we have less resource manning the phones and constantly being interrupted from their daily routines to take reservations. It has also allowed our customers flexibility in reaching us for reservations, as well as enabled us to use the CRM tools embedded in the system to enhance their dining experience, all of which has impacted our bottom line”.

Aggarwal welcomes the new entrants in Singapore who are also providing services in this space – “It increases awareness in the market place that online reservations matter and importantly, the diner will begin to demand this value add service from their favourite restaurants. We remain convinced however that restaurants need to feel secure with their service provider to deliver a reliable, robust and proven technology as they can’t afford to compromise the relationship with their customers. That’s what we offer, the opportunity for restaurants to work with our unparalleled expertise, dominant market position and the primacy of the software to offer a seamless dining experience.”

Something else that excites Aggarwal about the Singapore market is that the Info-communications Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) has turned its attention to enhancing the acceptance of technology in the sector. The IDA has issued a “Call-for-Collaboration” along with SPRING Singapore, the Singapore Tourism Board and Employment and Employability Institute (e2i) for interested parties to submit proposals on the development and adoption of mobility solutions. eat2eat has submitted a proposal as Aggarwal believes the market is now more mature with tools in place to achieve a sea-change in reservation and CRM dynamics.

“Consider the efforts that SPRING and the Singapore Tourism Board are making with the GEMS Up campaign. eat2eat’s software can, for example, impact service standards with a simple tool that enables online reservations,” said Aggarwal. “Primarily because immediate information on the diner is available to the restaurant, and it happens in real time, which enables the restaurateur to instantly enhance their service offering.”

“Although we are a Singaporean company, our focus has always been to offer regional coverage to our diners and to this end, we’ve spent the past few years signing up multiple regional deals, such as our initiative with Starwood Hotels and Resorts – We have been privileged to be the developers of this space in Asia Pacific, as we work with the industry to change reservation habits of a lifetime. Interestingly, over the past decade, it was initially restaurants who wanted to be able to offer online reservations but consumers weren’t yet accustomed to reserving tables that way but now, consumers are demanding the flexibility to book on line. With the advent of smart phone technology, Apple’s ipad, mobile internet penetration and speed and the acceptance of restaurateurs to secure their databases, using pen and paper to manage restaurants is exiting stage left.”

The company has recently made several new hires to boost its sales team and seeks to work with large, local restaurant chains that have traditionally managed all their reservations over the telephone.
